Yes, Virginia, There ARE Volcanoes in NM

Visiting the treasure trove of neat vistas in and around New Mexico is a must for any of its inhabitants, especially if you are an artist. Whenever possible, I find myself exploring with camera in tow, not only for the sheer beauty of the sites themselves but also to gain inspiration for my own compositions.

When approaching Albuquerque coming south from Santa Fe, one will undoubtedly notice the odd, otherworldly mounds off in the distance to the west. I discovered that this desert horizon scene was actually a set of extinct volcanoes, so of course I had to check it out. My intent in going late in the day was to hopefully capture the volcanoes at sunset. Little did I realize that the parking area closest to the site was actually on the west of the volcanoes at the edge of Petroglyph Monument, so I was not about to get the shot that I had hoped I would get. However, I think what I was able to capture is still very interesting and beautiful. I hiked east to the volcanoes in the waning sunset and let the changing light do the rest of the work.

For anyone who actually knows anything about photography (since I exclude myself), minimal adjustments to saturation were made in the second and last photos, but that was about it. Next time I suppose I will have to try the other side of Petroglyph National Monument and see what happens!
